Activity overview

Drawing upon his experience of closing two significantly underperforming schools and successfully setting up one of the biggest new schools in the country, Nick speaks about the ‘Power of Accountable Belongingness.’

A brand new building alone is not enough to bring about ‘Transformational Success.’ In his hierarchy of needs, Maslow emphasises the importance, after physical needs, of meeting people’s psychological and self-fulfilment needs, namely belongingness, esteem and self-actualisation.

Leaders have the ability to drive Transformational Success by creating the right workforce culture. It doesn’t matter whether you are building a school or building a business; it’s up to leaders to constantly shine a light on the dignity, value and worth of the people in that community because when people feel truly fulfilled then this creates a workforce culture where people are open to, and even welcoming of, accountability, thus earning trust and empowerment.

True Empowerment is about trusting people who have proved that they can really deliver. Nick calls this idea of earned autonomy Accountable Belongingness and believes that once this trust is established, True Empowerment is giving people a share in important decisions and providing opportunities to shape organisational goals.

Nick even uses the traits of cats and dogs (yes you read that right) to explain his ideas. To belong is to be dignified and to be dignified is to be fulfilled……..but it’s the Power of Accountable Belongingness that drives Transformational Success.
